The Waterloo Warriors women's hockey team are proving that they can play any style of the game, and still come out on top.
Mikayla Schnarr (Waterloo, ON/) made 28 saves, and a Tatum James' (Stratford, ON/) power play goal in the first period held up as the game winner, as the Warriors topped the Western Mustangs 1-0 on Saturday night in London. The victory keeps the fifth-ranked Warriors undefeated on the season, pushing their record to 6-0-2-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL).
For the second night in a row, the highest-scoring team in the nation was held to one goal. But for the second night in a row, a Warriors netminder made a single goal hold up – Schnarr earned her first shutout of the season a night after Kara Mark (New Hamburg, ON/) posted the first clean sheet in her OUA career in a 1-0 overtime win against TMU.
Waterloo opened the scoring in the final minute of the first period, when James whacked a Leah Herrfort (Palmerston, ON/) centering feed past Western goalie Kaitlyn Booth for a power play marker. Kassidy McCarthy (Bowmanville, ON/) also drew an assist on the goal, as the visitors took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The second period saw an early parade to the penalty box, and each team saw a power play opportunity negated with a penalty of their own. But Schnarr and the veteran Waterloo defence corps held the Mustangs at bay in the middle frame.
Western made a late push in the third, outshooting Waterloo 11-7 in the final 20 minutes, but Schnarr met every purple advance, helping secure the victory for the only undefeated team remaining in the country.
The Warriors will look to stretch their winning streak to nine games when they visit the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, November 18. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
