Women's hockey opened their 2022-23 season on the road in Guelph last night and the black and gold picked up right where they left off from the regular season a year ago, filling the net to earn a dominating 6-1 win over the Gryphons. Six different Warriors found the back of the net while
Mikayla Schnarr (Waterloo, ON/) with steady as she be in net for her first win of the season.
Kassidy McCarthy (Bowmanville, ON/) opened the scoring with a beautiful move on a partial breakaway. After whiffing on the initial backhand attempt, McCarthy stuck with it and slid the puck in as she fell to the ice.
Under two minutes later,
Leah Herrfort (Palmerston, ON/) sniped her first of the season. Herrfort came down the nearside wing and fired it past the blocker of Gryphons keeper Martina Fedel.
The Warriors made it 3-0 early in the second as
Madison Pritchard (Richards Landing, ON/) tipped home an
Emma Cheeseman (Waterloo, ON/) point shot. Waterloo kept coming in the middle frame, and reigning OUA west rookie of the year,
Keiara Raitt (Ancaster, ON/) finished off a beautiful feed to the slot by McCarthy to make it 4-0 for the visitors heading into the final frame.
Megan Dyck (Victoria, BC/) made it 5-0 midway through the third, as the second year forward notched her first career goal while
Carly Orth (Caledon, ON/) scored three minutes later to make it 6-0. Guelph got one late to spoil the shutout bid for Schnarr to make the final 6-1.
Waterloo will be back in action for their home opener on Saturday afternoon at 2:30pm as they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues, a team they haven't faced since November 30, 2019.
