Jessica Roque takes over as full-time head coach of women's basketball

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is thrilled to announce the hiring of Jessica Roque as the full-time Head Coach of the Warriors women's basketball program. Roque makes the move from the Ryerson Rams where she has spent the past four seasons as the full-time Assistant Coach.

With the Rams, Roque was the lead in preparing in-game tactics, practice facilitation, game film breakdown, recruiting, and more that has prepared her for a U SPORTS head coaching role. Roque also led the Rams in an interim head coaching role in the summer of 2018 during an international competition in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

"We are delighted to welcome Jessica to the Warriors family," said director of athletics and recreation, Roly Webster. "Jessica brings a ton of OUA and U SPORTS experience from a very reputable Rams basketball program, and will connect with our student-athletes from the outset."

"Although this offseason feels much different, we are very glad Jessica can join our program at a critical time and play an important role in developing and supporting our student-athletes on and off the court in preparation for a 2021 season."

On top of Roque's valuable experience gained at the U SPORTS level, she has coached in various other roles at the provincial and national level. Provincially, Roque led the U14 Ontario Girl's team in the Summer of 2019 and was also the assistant of the U17 Ontario Girl's team at the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Roque has also been a coach at the Ontario Basketball Association Centre for Performance from 2016-19.

Nationally, Roque was a training camp coach for the Junior National Men's Basketball team in 2017, a program that went on to win the FIBA World Cup gold medal. She was also a guest assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings in July of 2019 at their California Classic Tournament. In addition, Roque gained more valuable interuniversity experience as an assistant coach in the NCAA for Cleveland State University (CSU) during the 2015-16 season.

"It is clear from Jessica's credentials, she is more than ready to jump into the role as head coach, and we are ecstatic for her to lead this program to become a contender," said associate director, Brian Bourque. "Just by talking with her, you can tell she lives and breathes basketball and I know her infectious passion for the game will carry over to our student-athletes."

Roque also had a very decorated playing career, suiting up for the CSU Vikings for four seasons (2006-2010), winning the 2008 and 2010 Horizon League Championship as co-captain. In 2010, Roque graduated from CSU with honours and a bachelors of science in health science. She then went on to take two years of Graduate School, graduating with honours and a masters of education in exercise science.

"I am both excited and grateful for the opportunity to be the head coach of the Waterloo Warriors," commented Roque. "I'm looking forward to working with the bright young women on the team and engaging with the KW community."

"I want to thank Brian and Roly for welcoming me into the program. I would also like to thank Carly Clarke and Ryerson University for affording me the experience and helping develop the expertise I need to successfully lead this Warrior program. I am committed to growth and change in order to further support the Waterloo Warriors in becoming a world class women's basketball program"

Roque will begin working with her players throughout the summer months with hopes of getting back in the gym by the fall to start in-person training.
