The Warriors and Guelph Gryphons put on a show at the PAC on Saturday night as the two team with identical records met in the final regular season game of 2020. Guelph came away with the 5-set win, winning an extremely close final set by a score of 15-13.
It was a game of momentum as Guelph jumped out to take the first set 25-18 before the Warriors bounced back to even the match at 1's, winning the second 26-24.
Guelph again regained the edge winning the third set 25-11 to take control of the match but the never-say-die Warriors battled back to win the fourth 25-22, sending this epic match to a fifth.
In the fifth, Guelph jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Warriors tallied eight of the next nine points to take a 8-5 lead. The Gryphons however kept the seesaw battle going taking back control with eight of the next 10 points going their way and they would finish strong to win the set 15-13, and match 3-2.
Sarah Glynn (Fredericton/) was outstanding in her final regular season game as a sophomore putting down 23 kills giving her an incredible 286 kills on the season and 4.03 kills per set, both tops in the OUA. With her 23 kills, Glynn surpassed 500 career kills with 520 in just two seasons with the black and gold. Glynn also added 19 digs in the match.
Mackenzie Vallee (Waterdown/) also had a solid season finale with 12 kills and 15 digs while
Serena Otshudi (Hamilton/) put down seven kills and added six blocks.
Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) earned 46 assists in the match, giving her 615 (second most in OUA) on the season and over 2,000 in her career as she heads into her final season next year. Defensively,
Jenna Gravina (Burlington/) was on the mark, collecting 23 digs. Gravina finished the year with 223 digs, the fifth most in the province.
The Warriors wrap up the season with an 11-8 record and 22 points, tied with Windsor for the final OUA playoff spot. With two wins over the Lancers this season, Waterloo wins the tiebreaker and will crossover to play the top seed in the East, which is currently a tie between Toronto and Ryerson (both playing today).
