The No. 10 women's volleyball team earned a critical victory to open 2020 on Saturday afternoon in Toronto, defeating the York Lions in five sets.

After opening with two relatively comfortable set victories (25-17, 25-22), the Lions fought back to win the next two 25-23, 25-22. The Warriors however regained their composure and got some key kills from Karen Fan (Oakville/) and Mackenzie Vallee (Waterdown/) down the stretch to earn the fifth set by a score of 15-11 and match 3-2.

With the win the Warriors improved to 5-4 on the season while York dropped to 5-5.

Sarah Glynn (Fredericton/) led the Warriors attack with 20 kills while also adding 13 digs and three blocks. Vallee finished with 16 kills while Fan was also in double digits with 10 and was the leader in digs with 15.

The Warriors were outstanding from the service line with 13 aces led by Fan who had five. Serena Otshudi (Stoney Creek/) had four while Vallee had three.

Rounding out Waterloo's offence was Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) who added to her league lead in assists with 51. 

The Warriors were scheduled to play Nipissing tomorrow but due to inclement weather the game has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later time.
