Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 6 Warriors remain undefeated with two home wins

The No. 6 Warriors women's volleyball team continued their incredible run, beating RMC (3-0) and Queen's (3-2) on home court to move to 11-0 on the season. Waterloo remains the only undefeated team in the province.

On Friday night, Waterloo got past the RMC Paladins in straight set (20, 12, 23) as Waterloo used their line-up from top to bottom in the victory. Rookie left side Sarah Glynn (Fredericton/) led the way with 11 points on 10 kills and two assisted blocks. Samantha Warner (Ayr/) had a strong night as well with nine points (7 kills and 4 blocks) while Brooklyn Gallant (Cambridge/) tallied eight points.

Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) and Katrine Eistrat (Toronto/) combined for 32 assists in the win while Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) was stellar defensively and in her pass game with 11 digs. As a team Waterloo put down 36 kills and had 48 digs in the win.

On Saturday, Waterloo met up with the 6-4 Queen's Gaels and third best team from the competitive East division. It looked as if Waterloo was going to pick up their second straight 3-0 victory as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead winning both sets 25-22, but Queen's showed some fight winning the third set 25-22 and fourth 25-13 to send the match to a fifth.

In that fifth set the resilient and deep Warriors squad showed why they are one of the top teams in the country, winning it 15-10 to take the match 3-0.

"It was the first time this season we won two sets and then found our way into a fifth, and it was a great experience for our girls and I was proud of their resiliency to come out in the fifth and pull out the win," said head coach Richard Eddy after the game.

It was a milestone night for fifth year outside hitter Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver/) who with her 18 kills, surpassed 800 career kills. After the game Mackenzie was unaware of the milestone night and was humbled and honoured.

"I didn't even know I had that many career kills," said a speechless Mackenzie after the game. "It's an amazing feeling and I love being a part of this team."

Mackenzie would finish with a game high 19 points on 18 kills and two blocks while Glynn had another strong night with 14.5 points. Samantha Warner (Ayr/) and Ella Stewart (Ottawa/) were also major factors in the win with 10.5 and 6 points respectively.

Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) was on point with her sets, tallying 34 assists and four kills in the win while Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) was her steady self with a game high 16 digs.

"I'm working with a group of girls that put the work in every day. They show up, they follow the plan, stick to their routine and the results are showing," said Eddy following the win.

When asked about the prospect of hosting a playoff game and even the OUA Final Four a humbled Eddy said, "we understand we have to continue to put the work in every day, respect each opponent, have championship behaviours, and continue to learn so we get better everyday."

The undefeated Warriors will continue their process next weekend with pair of games against York (Saturday) and Nipissing (Sunday). Both games are scheduled for noon starts.
