It was the annual School Day Game at the PAC on Thursday morning with over 1,400 elementary aged students in attendance to catch Guelph and Waterloo duke it out. Guelph would come away with the 65-59 victory.
The first half was a struggle for the black and gold as they went 5-for-33 from the field with just 17 points but showed up with much more heart and passion in the second half with 42.
Waterloo fought all the way back from a 14 point deficit and in the dying minutes,
Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) gave Waterloo a one-point (59-58) lead late with a 3-point play. On the next possession, Guelph's Tommy Yanchus would draw the foul and hit both free throw's to put his squad back up by a score of 60-59.
Hodzic would have one more shot at taking back the lead but Rasheed Weekes stole the ball and Hodzic was forced to foul giving Guelph two more free throws. Weekes hit both and sunk a late jumper with the foul to hand Waterloo the 65-59 loss.
Hodzic led the Warriors with 24 points going 7-for-17 from the field and 10-for-11 from the stripe. He was also massive on the boards with a game high 13 rebounds.
Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) was the next best Warrior with 12 points while
Justin Malnerich (Cambridge/St. Benedict's Catholic Secondary) had 11.
Yanchus led the Gryphons with 21 points while Weekes and Malcolm Glanville each had nine.
Both teams struggled offensively as Guelph finished 32% from the field compared to 30.2% for Waterloo. It was a grind for both teams as Guelph emerged victorious down the stretch.
Waterloo will now take on the Brock Badgers on Saturday night at 8pm looking for their first win of 2019.
