For the second straight week Guelph and Waterloo went to battle with two huge points on the line and for the second straight week the Gryphons came out on top in five nail-biting sets.
After Guelph took the opening set 25-15 Waterloo bounced back and took control of the match winning set 2 and 3 by scores of 25-22 and 25-21.
In the fourth, Waterloo jumped out to an early 9-5 lead which built to a 13-11 advantage but the Gryphons fought back taking the next 9 of 11 points to go up 20-15.
From there Guelph went on to capture the set and held on to their momentum in the fifth set (winning it 15-10) to claim the match in five.
With the win, Guelph leapfrogged Waterloo in the standings with their 6-9 record and 12 points to grab hold of the fourth and final playoff spot. Waterloo dropped to 5-9 but have one game in hand on the Gryphs'.
Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver/) led her Warriors with 20 points on 19 kills and one service ace while
Kelsey Caza (Waterloo/) had 14 with 12 kills and two blocks up the middle. Another middle,
Samantha Warner (Ayr/) had a nice game with 10.5 points. She put away eight kills while adding one service ace and two blocks.
Katrine Eistrat (Toronto/) and
Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) combined for 54 assists in a strong losing effort while defensively,
Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) was outstanding in the match with a game high 23 digs.
Guelph was led by Michaela Hellinga with 16.5 points on 16 kills while Libby Donevan put down 13 attacks.
The Warriors will turn their attention to their final two regular season home games this coming weekend. The black and gold take on Toronto on Saturday (4pm) and Trent on Sunday (12pm) and will hope to come away with four points.
