Ahne wins gold, Sauer bronze at OUA Championship

Over the weekend, the Waterloo Warriors track and field team competed at the OUA Championships in Windsor where the men's team posted a 6th place finish while the women were 7th.

The most notable results for the Warriors occurred in the Women's 60m dash and the Men's Long Jump. Tegan Sauer (Kitchener/), in her final season as a Waterloo Warrior, sprinted her way to a bronze medal in the 60m with a time of 7.56s, mere thousandths of a second away from silver.  Sauer now has her sights set on the U SPORTS podium as she is ranked 3rd in the country going into the event from March 8th-10th.

As for the Long Jump, Jörg Ahne (Merseburg) set a new varsity record for UWaterloo with his amazing leap of 7.42m.  Ahne is the top ranked jumper in U SPORTS and hopes to defend his 2017 U SPORTS gold in two weeks time.

Other top 10 finishes include Joshua Lorentz (Douro-Dummer/) in the 300m who had a season's best time of 34.91s, placing him 6th. In the high jump, David Nightingale (Kitchener/) finished 7th with a jump of 1.94m while Dilveer Virk (Brampton/) jumped a personal best height of 1.91m for 8th, and Solomon Davidson (Ottawa/) was 10th.  Akiva Goldberg (Toronto/) had an 8th place finish in the 1000m,  Paulo Miguel (Montreal/) claimed 9th in the 60m hurdles, and Seyi Alao grabbed a personal best time of 7.09s in the 60m.

Additionally, Cassidy Stachowich (Melville/) finished 10th in the Long Jump, while Ashley Blayney-Hoffer (Guelph/) had a personal best time of 9.22s in the 60m hurdles, which gave her 7th all-time in Waterloo history.

The men and women's relays also claimed points for their respective teams. The Women's 4x200m relay crossed the finish line with a season's best time of 1:44.43s finishing 6th, while their 4x400m and 4x800m teams both ran to 7th place finishes and season's best times.  Rachel Bronzovich (Oakville/) had a notable 800m split of 2:22.24, which is 9th all time in Warriors history.

For the men, the 4x800m had an amazing race running a season's best time of 7:56.53 and finishing 7th. All four men, Austin Grismer (Rosthern/), Tony Kwok (Toronto/), Nathan Flach (Toronto/), and Akiva Goldberg (Toronto/), had personal best times in the race, with Kwok, Flach, and Goldberg all breaking the two minute mark.  Furthermore, the 4x400m was 4th and the 4x200m was 5th.  Owen Babcock (Kitchener/) and Joshua Lorentz (Douro-Dummer/) had season's best 400m splits with 50.0s and 49.2s respectively; Lorentz's was the third best among all teams.

The Warriors say good-bye to graduating athletes Rachel Bronzovich (Oakville/), Sabrina Marsh (Sault Ste. Marie/), Kelsi Darmon (Fergus/), and David Nightingale (Kitchener/) who competed at their final meet in the black and gold.  The team thanks the athletes for their dedication and perseverance over the years and wishes them the best with their future endeavours.

The Warriors team will be watching the rankings closely over the next few days to see which of their athletes will be competing at the U SPORTS meet.  As the current rankings sit, Lorentz's 300m, the women's 4x200m,  and the men's 4x800m are 13th in the country. They are hoping for a scratch from a competitor to book their tickets alongside the following U SPORTS qualifiers: Sauer's 60m, Ahne's Long Jump, Miguel's 60mH and the men's 4x200m and 4x400m teams.
