Warriors drop season finale to Western, face Ryerson in OUA quarter-finals

The Warriors took on the Western Mustangs on Saturday night in their final regular season contest of 2018. Despite falling in four sets, Waterloo has a lot of positives to take out of the match as they prepare for their OUA quarter-final match on Saturday against Ryerson at 4pm.

The Warriors took the opening set in convincing fashion, winning it 25-17 before Western came back to win the second set in lopsided fashion, 25-16.

The final two sets were a battle from both squads but the Mustangs escaped with 25-22, 27-25 victories to claim the match 3-1.

Sarina Trasolini (Vancouver/) was outstanding in the match with a team high 17 points on 15 kills and two blocks.

Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver/) and Samantha Warner (Ayr/) were also in double digits in points with 11.5 and 11 respectively while Serena Otshudi (Stoney Creek/) was huge at the net with six blocks.

Setting up the Warriors attack was Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) who finished the match with 33 assists while on the defensive side, Mackenzie collected 18 digs and Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) had 17.

For Western, it was an offensive clinic put on by Kelsey Veltman who put away a game high 30 kills in the win.

Waterloo finished the season at 8-11, good for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West and will crossover to play the top-seed Ryerson Rams from the east next Saturday in Toronto.

It will be a tough match for the black and gold against a Ryerson Rams team that went a perfect 19-0 and dropped only 11 sets all year long. Waterloo will however go in with confidence having played their top volleyball of the season their last couple of matches.
