Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Perfection! Warriors top Brock in 5 for perfect first half

The first half of the 2018-19 women's volleyball season can only be described in one word; Perfection! The Warriors wrapped up their most historic start in program history on Saturday night with a come from behind five set win over Brock to finish the calendar year with a perfect 7-0 record.

"Every player on the team is invested in this experience and giving their best. It's been a real team effort to generate this early success, but there is still a lot of work to do to reach our goals," said head coach Richard Eddy. "I can't say enough positive things about the athletes and their desire to improve every day.  We're going to continue to challenge ourselves in training and attempt to perform at our very best by the end of the season."

Waterloo remains the only undefeated team in the OUA and sit well on top of the OUA west standings with 14 points. Brock, who fell to 5-4 in the loss, and Western (5-3) are both four back with 10 points each.

Waterloo fell behind early dropping the first set 19-25 but battled back to take a 2-1 lead winning the second set 25-19 and third 25-15. Brock showed they are one of the more elite teams in the fourth winning that set 25-18 but Waterloo showed their experience and early season maturity in the fifth, taking it 15-10 and match 3-2.

Leading the way once again was fifth year outside hitter Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver/) who had an enormous game with 21 points on 20 kills and two assisted blocks. Rookie left side Sarah Glynn (Fredericton/) was also big for the second straight night with 13 kills, one service ace and two blocks. Mackenzie is third in OUA kills per set at 3.88 while Glynn is ninth at 3.13.

Also getting in on Waterloo's attack was a pair of middles, rookie Ella Stewart (Ottawa/), and fourth year Samantha Warner (Ayr/) finishing with five and four kills respectively.

Waterloo had a strong defensive effort in the win as three Warriors hit double digits in digs. Fifth year libero Sarah Remedios (Ajax/) led the way with 16 digs while Brooklyn Gallant (Cambridge/) had 14 and Glynn collected 12.

Claire Gagne (Cambridge/) and Katrine Eistrat (Toronto/) set the Warriors up with 29 and 11 assists respectively.

Waterloo will now enjoy their break, training and working on fundamentals to improve and come back even stronger in the second half as they face some tough OUA east competition.

Their first match goes Friday, January 12 against Trent before they face a stiff test in Toronto on Saturday, January 13, both road matches.
