In just the third game of the season for the men's volleyball program, Waterloo showed their early growth with a big five set win over Western for their first victory of the season. Waterloo improved to 1-2 while Western fell to 3-2.
Western took a close first set 26-24 before Waterloo bounced back to claim the next two sets 25-22, 26-24 for a 2-1 lead. Western pushed back in the fourth, winning it 25-18 but Waterloo made use of their home crowd to pick them up in the fifth, and stepped on the pedal taking the set 15-6. Waterloo had seven kills and an impressive zero errors in the fifth and final set.
Deman Dulat (Mississauga/) led the charge with 16 kills and one block while rookie outside hitter
Nolan Spencer (Kitchener/) put away 13.
Matthew Mawdsley (London/) had seven kills and was impressive from the service line with four aces. He was also a monster at the net with eight blocks in the win.
Kevin LeBreux (Cumberland/) rounded out the attack with eight kills, including two in the final three points of the match.
Second year setter,
Colm Guyn (Lethbridge/) had a very solid match with 46 assists.
Waterloo will have another weekend off before they close out the calendar year with a pair of road games, November 23 and 24.
