Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hodzic and Petrov heat up Thunder Bay on Lakehead road trip

The men's basketball team took on the Lakehead Thunderwolves in back-to-back games this weekend on the always challenging road trip to North Bay.

The black and gold came away with a 1-1 record while the dynamic duo of Nedim Hodzic (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) and Simon Petrov (Waterloo/Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary) absolutely lit up the Thunderdome Gymnasium. The two combined for 120 of Waterloo's 169 weekend points contributing to 71% of their offence.

In Friday's contest, Waterloo dropped the contest 98-89 as the Warriors had no answer for Lakehead's own dynamic duo of Mor Menashe and Quincy Johnson who put up 24 and 28 points respectively in the win. Lakehead jumped out to a 28-12 lead after the opening quarter and the Warriors just could not recover the rest of the way.

Hodzic finished with a game high 33 points and 15 rebounds while Petrov knocked down 24. Colin Connors (St. Johns/Gonzaga High (Brock)) was also in double digits, notching 12 points off the bench.

On Saturday, the Warriors had a huge third quarter, outscoring the home side 34-11 which helped lead the Warriors to the 80-74 win. Hodzic again led all scorers with 34 points and an incredible 17 rebounds while Petrov was as impressive with 29 points. Waterloo out rebounded the T-Wolves 40-34 while having a solid night at the line going 16-for-17.

Hodzic is having a remarkable season in his sophomore campaign leading the country in rebounds per game with 11.9. Hodzic also has 22.5 points per game which is third best in the OUA and ranks him eighth in U SPORTS. Petrov isn't far behind with 18.4 point per game, good for eighth most in the OUA.

With the .500 weekend, Waterloo is now 7-9 on the season and tied for fourth with Windsor in the ultra-competitive OUA west.

Waterloo will be back in action on Friday night at the PAC against Laurier in the battle of Waterloo. Tipoff is set for 8pm.
