Warriors go 1-1 in opening weekend action with Mac and Toronto

The Warriors began their 2017 campaign on the weekend with a loss and a win against Toronto and McMaster on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Playing the Blues at their outdoor courts in Scarborough has never the easiest of beginnings for the Warriors and this year was no different.  Playing one of the strongest OUA teams and doing so outdoors does not make for an ideal start for the Warriors who practice and play in the dome at the Waterloo Tennis Club.  While a contributing factor, the reason for the loss against Toronto was simply that the Blues were the stronger team.

The Warriors lost 2-5 with the wins coming in singles from two rookies, Alexander Stoll at #6 and Peter Hull at #4. In doubles, the Warriors came close in two of the three matches but both lost 6-8.

On Sunday the Warriors eked out a win when they hosted the McMaster Marauders at the Waterloo Tennis Club.  The home team started off well sweeping all three doubles matches to gain the doubles point.  This was followed by two wins from rookies Christian Varriale at no. 6 and Peter Hull at no. 3. The Marauders, however, stormed back with three singles wins.  With the score 3-3, the decider rested on the racquets and will power of the players playing at no. 4.

Waterloo's Saifullah Shoaib (Karachi, Pakistan) won the first set 6-1 but strained his back in the effort. Hampered by the injury, he lost the second set 4-6. In the third set with both players aware that their match would decide the outcome, they gave it their all, supported by their teammates cheering their every point.  Shoaib prevailed in the end winning the final set 7-5.

The Warriors next match is against Brock Sunday, September 17 at the Waterloo Tennis Club starting at noon.
