Jordan Hoover (Sault Ste. Marie) raised eyebrows from scouts across the CFL at both the regional and national combines and his hard work was awarded on Sunday night in the CFL Draft as the defensive back was selected in the fourth round, 31
st overall by the Edmonton Eskimos.Â
Â
"Jordan is an outstanding young man that epitomizes what we're working to accomplish with our Warrior football program," said Warriors football head coach
Chris Bertoia.Â
"I am very proud of Jordan and I know he has a bright future in the CFL. He has an extremely high level of character as proven this off-season working tirelessly with our team during training sessions to get stronger. Hoover is a true leader and very impressive athlete and student, after finishing his final year with an average of 83.6%. We wish him all the best in Edmonton."
Hoover joins Matt Vonk, the last member of the Warriors football program to be drafted when he was selected in fifth round (38
th overall) by the Sasketchewan Roughriders in 2013. Vonk made his CFL debut on August, 2014 following his four year career in the black and gold.Â
Â
Vonk and Hoover are the only two former Warriors who will be in the CFL after Christ Best announced his retirement back on February 23 after an incredibly successful 10-year career with the Roughriders. Best was the second highest Warrior draft pick, going fourth overall in 2005. The highest Warrior selected was linebacker Frank Kosec (1978-80) who was chosen first overall by Calgary in 1981. Â
Hoover had an outstanding season in his final year with the black and gold posting 39 solo tackles (14th in the country) and 10 assisted tackles. Â Hoover also collected one interception and one fumble recovery in his eight games of action.
Hoover led U SPORTS in interceptions in 2015 with five and was invited to the 2016 CIS East-West Bowl. Â
