Warriors make a big splash at 2017 OUA Swimming Championship

Warrior swimmers raced the best in Ontario at the University of Toronto this past weekend. The hosts dominated the meet winning both the men's and women's titles decisively. There was one national record and 12 meet records set during a very fast and deep meet. Twelve schools and almost 400 swimmers make this the top conference meet in the country every year.

After 10 years of placing 6th in the men's meet the Warriors took a great run at moving up and it came down to the last relay before McMaster defeated Waterloo and the team continued their run of sixth place finishes. On the women's side the team moved up one spot this year to 9th with a couple of team record swims really carrying the group.

There were many highlights during the three day meet. Jonathan Ramkissoon (Trinidad) earned a medal of every colour winning gold in the 100 breast, silver in the 50 and bronze in the 200. Jon was joined by Alex Lojko, Danyon Chu (Unionville) and Aidan Chow (Aurora) to win silver in the 200 free relay. Seven team records were set during the meet. Josie Andres (Thorndale) shocked herself with a huge drop to 25.81 seconds in the 50 free; Olivia Kelly (Oshawa) narrowly missed the U Sport qualifying standard with a 1:12.20 100 breast that now stands as the fastest ever performance by a Warrior; Jonathan Ramkissoon (Trinidad)'s 28.01 50 breast lowers his own record; Aidan Chow (Aurora) was 7th in the 50 fly at 24.88; Lou-Salome Chou (Shanghai) finished some excellent work this year with a 30.21 50 back; and besides the 200 free relay the men's team of Peter Li (Oakville), Danyon Chu (Unionville), Alex Lojko and Zao Chen (Ottawa) posted a 3:26.80 in the 400 free relay.

Other point scoring individual swims were posted by Danyon Chu (Unionville) (50, 100, 200 free), Frances Heather (Waterloo) (100 back), Olivia Kelly (Oshawa) (50, 100, 200 breast), Michelle Cheng (Markham) (50 breast), Justin Dumouchelle (LaSalle) (50, 100 breast), Kieran Waterous (Kamloops) (200 fly, 400 IM), Kaan Alsan (Markham) (200 fly), Sydney Dysart (Newmarket) (800 free), Zao Chen (Ottawa) (200 free), Eric Woolven (Toronto) (200 free), Nicole Nowicki (Toronto) (100 fly, 400 IM), Emmy Kucheran (400 IM), Aidan Chow (Aurora) (50 and 100 fly) and Josie Andres (Thorndale) (50 free, 50 fly).

The Warriors graduate 5 swimmers this season. Team captains Madlynn Palmer (Kingston) and Frances Heather (Waterloo) are joined by Meaghen Vydelingum (Toronto) leaving the women's team. Malcolm Good (Oakville) and Nathan Lam (Ottawa) are the only men who have completed their 5 years. The team always meets to honour their graduates and this year was very special as each of these people have made great friendships, shown fantastic leadership and growth through their time at Waterloo. We wish them all the best.

U Sport Championships are in 10 days at the University of Sherbrooke. Jonathan Ramkissoon (Trinidad), Aidan Chow (Aurora) and Josie Andres (Thorndale) will represent the Warriors against the best university swimmers in Canada. Jon enters the meet ranked 2nd in the country in both the 50 and 100 breast.
