The Waterloo women's volleyball team put together an extremely spirited effort on Sunday in London against Western but came up just short in the seesaw affair. Waterloo and Western went back and forth all game long before the Mustangs eventually took the fifth and final set 15-10.
The Warriors took the opening set 25-23 before the Mustangs bounced back to even the match, winning the second set 25-21. The black and gold regained their composure in the third set by a score of 28-26, capped off by a
Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver) ace.
Up 2-1 Waterloo looked poised for the win but Western had other ideas jumping out to a 22-17 lead in the fourth set. Waterloo would however collect the next five points to make it a 22-all game. Western who however bounce back to take four of the next six points to win the set 26-24, sending this match to a fifth and deciding set.
Just as the theme had been all game long the two combatants exchanged points throughout the fifth set before Western took seven of eight points late in the set to go up 14-9. The gap would be too much to overcome and Waterloo would fall 15-10 in the set to lose the match 3-2.
Despite the loss, the Warriors proved they can compete with one of the top teams in the province and will battle every step of the way.
Claire Mackenzie (Vancouver) was once again a force for the Warriors with 12 kills and 13.5 points while
Alyson Colpitts (Fredericton) and
Kayla Wierts (Drayton) each put away 10 kills. Wierts was also solid at the net with five blocks while
Casey Clunas (Harriston) was a Warrior wall with nine.
Claire Gagne (Cambridge) and
Karly Smith (Lockport) teamed up for 37 assists.
On Western's side it was Kelsey Veltman doing most of the damage with 25 kills and five blocks in a winning effort.
Waterloo will now turn their attention to their home opener on Friday against Guelph. Game time is set for 7pm and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
