Prevailing Wind: OT goal leads Warriors past Lions

Box Score In a tight-checking, defensive battle, it was only fitting that a trio of blueliners combined to push the Waterloo Warriors past the York Lions on Saturday night.

Cam Wind (Barrie) tipped home the game-winning goal off a beautiful passing play from Eric Diodati (Niagara Falls) and Mike Moffat (Waterloo) as the Warriors earned a 2-1 overtime victory over the Lions for their first home victory of the season.

Phillip Fife (Oromocto) also scored for the Warriors, who improve to 3-4-2 on the season. Bryce Milson scored York's only goal of the night, as the Lions lost for just the second time in their last eight games.

The win was also a milestone in the career of Waterloo head coach Brian Bourque, who earned his 200th career victory (regular season/playoffs combined). Bourque joins Waterloo hall-of-fame coach Don McKee as the only two bench bosses in program history with 200 combined regular season and playoff victories.

Mike Morrison (Hamilton) earned the win in Waterloo's net, turning aside 20 shots in the victory. At the other end of the ice, Lions netminder Mack Shields stole his team a single point in the standings with a 30-save effort.

The Warriors opened the scoring midway through the first period when Fife's centering attempt for Cam Nicoll (Loretto) bounced off a Lions player in front and past Shields. York evened the score less than five minutes later, when Milson drove the net from the side boards and stuffed one past Morrison's blocking hand to even the score 1-1 after the first.

Each team had a number of chances to grab the lead in the final 40 minutes, but neither club could break through. The best opportunity to end the game in regulation came midway through the third, when York enjoyed a 49-second 5-on-3 advantage. But a few big saves from Morrison and some solid penalty-killing from the Warriors sent the game to overtime.

As he's done in the past in 4-on-4 situations, Bourque deployed Moffat as a forward, and the move paid immediate dividends. With just over two minutes to play in the first extra session, Moffat dangled at the blue line to keep the puck in, and fed Diodati on the far side point. Diodati then froze the defender and hit a streaking Wind in the slot, who redirected it off the post and in for the game-winner.

The Warriors will now prepare to welcome a pair of Eastern division opponents next weekend, when the Ottawa Gee-Gees and McGill Redmen come to Waterloo. Puck drop for Friday's game versus Ottawa is scheduled for 7pm, while Saturday's face-off with the Redmen is scheduled for 4pm.
