The Warriors had a tough time against McGill in their first home game of the season Saturday at the Waterloo Tennis Club. Always a solid team, the Redmen beat the hosts 5-2.
The Warriors lost two nail biters in the double matches when two points were all that separated the winners from the losers. The no. 1 and 2 teams played super tie-breaks when the score was tied at 7-7. The Warriors no. 1 team of John Chan (Whistler) and rookie Eddie Wang () lost 7-9 and the no. 2 team of Joe Zeng (Markham) and Nate Flach (Toronto) 6-8. Both Waterloo teams faced several match points before the Redmen finally closed out the matches.
In singles, only John Chan (Whistler) playing at no. 2 and rookie Eddie Wang () at no. 3 managed wins. Chan won in two sets playing the powerful tennis we've come to expect. Wang, came through with a three-set win against a solid opponent in the last match of the evening. It was also the match of the day with both teams supporting their team mate in an exciting game. Despite the overall loss, Wang's victory allowed the Warriors day to end on a buoyant note.
The following day Sunday, the Warriors traveled to Scarborough to play the University of Toronto at its satellite campus there. Playing outdoors in beautiful weather conditions, the Warriors were overwhelmed in the doubles by teams that were clearly superior. The Warriors' woes continued into the singles round when only one win, that by John Chan (Whistler) was secured. Chan is the only Warrior unbeaten in singles so far.
The Warriors are at home this coming weekend to Carleton on Saturday and Western on Sunday.
