The Western Mustangs scored early and oftern to spoil the women's rugby season opening game and black and gold day at Warrior Field on Saturday. Â Black and gold day was once again a huge success with over 2,500 first year students attending the game but unfortunately the Warriors came out stale dropping the game 52-5.
It wasn't the coaching debut newly appointed head coach Andy Ireland had hoped for as Western had their way with his squad in front of the boisterous home crowd. Â The Warriors were simply worn out in the opening half as the Mustangs controlled the tempo from the get go. Â The Mustangs put the game away with two tries in the final three minutes of the first half as the black and gold could not recover.
Veronica Harrigan did most the Mustang damage with three tries for 15 points while her teammate Andrea Bowra had 13 points on one try and four successful converts. Â Rounding out the visiting attack was Nicola Case with two tries while Danielle Spice and Paige Farries each had one.
The lone bright spot came from Courtney Munro (Orillia) who gave the fans something to cheer about with her first try of the season.
The Warriors will look to bounce back next Saturday under the lights as they host the McMaster Maruaders at 7:30pm on Warrior Field.
