Marauders spoil Waterloo's home opener in straight sets

Box Score
The women's volleyball team showed they can compete with the top teams in the OUA, sticking with the No. 10 McMaster Marauders on Friday night on the PAC.  Despite the straight set loss, the Warriors were right there, they were just unable to take advantage of their opportunities while making costly errors throughout the match.  McMaster had 34 kills in the match compared to just 23 for the Warriors while Waterloo's 21 errors also hindered their chances.

The first set went the way of the Marauders by a score of 25-20 as the Warriors found themselves down throughout.  Down 19-13 Waterloo would put away eight of the next 11 points, making the score 22-20 for the visitor's but that is as close as they would get as the next three points would go McMaster's way.

The second set looked promising for the Warriors off the get-go as the opening point was a lengthy rally with outstanding digs by the home side capped off by an Alyson Colpitts (Fredericton) kill.  But the Warriors could not build any momentum as McMaster would put away 13 of the next 15 points to take a 13-3 lead.  The lead would become insurmountable as the Marauders cruised to the finish line taking the set 25-17.

Waterloo looked poised to send this match to a fourth set after coming out with a great offensive attack in the early going of the third.  Sammie Gwozdz (Waterloo) and Colpitts were leading the charge while Casey Clunas (Harriston) was standing tall at the net with several big blocks to give Waterloo a 17-11 lead.  Unfortunately the home side could not put the gas down and McMaster would go on a 14-4 run to close out the set, 25-21 and match, 3-0.

Colpitts led all Waterloo players with seven kills while Emily Ibbotson (Cambridge) and Casey Clunas (Harriston) had four each.  Emily Needles (Thorndale) finished the contest with 16 assists and eight digs.

For McMaster, Joanna Jedrzejewska was the offensive catalyst with 11 kills while Rebecca Steckle had seven.  Steckle also chipped in with four blocks in the game.  Setting up the Marauder attack was Caitlin Genovy who had 27 assists in the win.

Waterloo will be back in action tomorrow night as they host the Guleph Gryphons at 6pm in the PAC.
