Box Score Sometimes, you can win every aspect of a hockey game, except on the scoreboard. The Waterloo Warriors were reminded of that on Saturday night.
Guelph Gryphons goaltender Andrew D'Agostini made 40 saves, and his goalposts added two more as the Gryphons defeated the Warriors 1-0 in Guelph's home opener on Saturday night.
On a night when the Gryphons raised their 2014-15 OUA championship banner, it was an unfortunate case of déjà vu for the Warriors. In the decisive game of their playoff series last season, the Warriors badly outshot and outplayed the Gryphons, only to have D'Agostini shut the door and steal a 4-1 victory – that time, with the help of four goal posts.
In this one, a second-period goal from Guelph rookie Cody Thompson was the only marker of the evening. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) got the start for the Warriors and was excellent when called upon – especially with a beautiful glove save late in the second – but he left the game after two periods and didn't return. Chris Hurry (Summerland) came in to turn aside only 4 shots in the third, while Morrison stopped 14 in a losing cause.
The Warriors also had a pair of goals called back as the net had been dislodged before the puck crossed the line, as both goaltenders fought the overly sensitive pegging system at the Gryphon Centre Arena.
The loss drops the Warriors to 2-2-0 on the season, while Guelph's first win of the young year improves their record to 1-2-0. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Warriors will now return home for a pair of games next weekend against OUA East division opponents, as they'll host the RMC Paladins on Friday, October 23, before welcoming the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, October 24. Â
