Box Score The Waterloo women's hockey team was looking for a weekend sweep but the Laurentian Voyageurs had other ideas on Saturday afternoon in Sudbury. The Voyageurs who are off to a hot start in the season scored at 12:35 in the third to even the game and scored two in the shootout to top the Warriors 2-1.
With the new points format in the OUA women's hockey standings, the Warriors have four points (three for a regulation win, and one for the shootout loss) and sit sixth overall (1-1-1). Laurentian is undefeated with one regulation win and two overtime wins.
The Warriors started quickly in what was a physical opening frame. Neither team could generate quality scoring chances as the first period ended scoreless. In the second, Laurentian came out flying, creating a lot of shots and chances as the Voyageurs were all over the Warriors. However, it was Waterloo who scored on the counter attack and broke the deadlock. Rebecca Rutherford (Ajax) had the goal for the Warriors, going high, glove side on Emily Toffoli as the Warriors took a 1-0 lead into the third. Amy Barnard (Cambridge) collected the lone assist on the Rutherford snipe.
The Voyageurs came out pushing for the equalizer in the third but were held in check until midway through the period. A little over halfway through the period, Ellery Veerman potted the tying goal for the Voyageurs with a shot high over the glove of Stephanie Sluys (Clinton). The Voyageurs pushed for another goal to win it in regulation but the Warriors held strong and the game was off to overtime.
No one could find the net in the first overtime so we were off to a second overtime period. Despite the 3 on 3 format, once again neither team was able to score and the game was too be decided in the shootout.
In the shootout, rookies Brooklyn Davis and Morgan McCann both scored for the Voyageurs and Emily Toffoli shut the door as the Voyageurs walked away with the 2-1 win.
Goaltender Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) was outstanding for the Warriors stopping 40 of 41 shots faced in the loss. Toffoli was the less busier of the two tender's turning aside 25 of 26 shots including all shootout attempts.
The Warriors will be back in action next weekend as they face the Windsor Lancers in their home opener. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
