Warriors nearly tame Lions in 1-0 loss

Box Score

The CIS 5th ranked York Lions soccer team visited the Warriors this afternoon and had their work cut out for them. York came away with a 1-0 victory on a goal by Nour Ghoneim in what was a tight defensive match. The Warriors have yet to come away with their first victory on the season.

The match started with little in way of offence as both teams traded possessions and were strong defensively in the middle of the pitch. Lesia Bandura (Kitchener) had a solid game in goal, making 5 saves in the losing effort.

York's Colleen Beesley generated the most opportunities for the Lions in the first half, only to be turned aside by Bandura. Few quality scoring chances were created in the first half and both squads went into the break with a scoreless draw.

The second half saw Waterloo with the first scoring opportunity after the Lions' Marilyn Grammenopoulos conceded a yellow on her own 20-yard line. The free kick was cleared by York and the deadlock remained.

Waterloo's Kiersten Colbran (Sarnia) conceded a yellow of her own in the 64th minute on a strong foul. York looked poised to create some offence when a teasing ball was sent through the 6-yard box with nobody on the end of it.

Lions' Ghoneim would open the scoring in the 67th minute on an excellent run that nearly put her offside. Ghoneim made no mistake and gave York their first lead of the game. Ghoneim would add a couple chances late in the game but could not add the insurance marker.

Colbran conceded a second yellow in the 90th minute and was ejected from the game. The Warriors captain will miss Sunday's match vs. Windsor.

The Warriors lost the game 1-0 but showed great competitiveness in showing they could stick with the top ranked teams in the nation. The Warriors will travel to the Lancers' pitch this Sunday before returning for their next home game Wednesday, Sept 24 vs Guelph.
