Box Score The Waterloo Warriors took to their home court again on Friday night as they hosted the OUA East Toronto Varsity Blues. Thanks to a 17 point run to close out the first half, Toronto defeated Waterloo 75-63 and move the Warriors to 0-2 on the young season.
After nine lead changes to start the game, Waterloo had a 21-16 lead with 5:48 remaining in the first half. They went dry and didn't score again in the half as Toronto had seven different players contribute to the run and a 33-21 lead at half time. Waterloo shot just 21% in the first half and allowed 12 offensive rebounds by Toronto for second attempts.
To start the second half, Toronto extended their lead to 18 points before Waterloo mounted a comeback. By the third quarter, six straight points from
Marti Killeen (Oakville) brought the margin back to single digits at 49-40. Early in the fourth, Toronto extended the lead again, this time to as much as 16 points on three different occasions. A late charge by Waterloo minimized the damage, but it was too late as the black and gold dropped the contest to Toronto 75-63.
Waterloo's always dependable
Marti Killeen (Oakville) had 15 points and 7 rebounds, while
Madison Behr (Ancaster) had 12 points and
Emily Wilk (Oakville) chipped in with 11.
Toronto had 17 more shot attempts than Waterloo thanks in large part to their offensive rebounds. Selali Acolatse had 13 rebounds and 16 points for Toronto and Jill Stratton led all scorers with 27 points.
The next game for the Warriors is Wednesday night when they travel to Toronto to face the York Lions. Game time at the Tait McKenzie Centre is 6:00pm.
