Box Score Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) might have lost her shutout streak, but she made sure her team didn't lose their winning streak.
Sluys made 27 saves, and
Marissa Redmond (Ajax) scored the eventual game-winner with just under six minutes left in regulation as the Waterloo Warriors upset the 6th-ranked Queen's Gaels 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
The win was Waterloo's fourth in a row following seven straight losses, propelling them to a 5-5-3 record on the season. Meanwhile, the Gaels dropped only their second game in regulation all season, as they fall to 8-2-2. Stephanie Pascal turned away 23 shots in the loss for the visitors from Kingston.
The Warriors opened the scoring early in the game when Siobhan Hewit-Kenda found twine just over three minutes into the first. The goaltenders took over from there, and the opening 20 minutes expired with the Warriors up 1-0.
The rarest occurrence of the afternoon happened just over four minutes into the second period – Slyus surrendered a goal. It took a goal from one of the league's top scorers, as Queen's forward Taryn Pilon beat her to tie the score at 1-1 after two periods.
Sluys' shutout streak ended at an outrageous 209:35. It was the first goal she allowed since the third period of a 3-0 loss to the Western Mustangs on November 2.
With the shutout streak over, though, Sluys showed no signs of slowing down in the third period. She held the fort and maintained a 1-1 tie, allowing Redmond to find the net for the game winner late in the third period.
It was the second win in four games over nationally-ranked opponents for the Warriors, who will now close out the first half of the season with another game against a top-10 team – albeit one that plays just down the road. The Warriors will renew their rivalry with the 10
th-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night, with puck drop slated for 7:30 pm at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
