Box Score The Warriors fell to the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 on Saturday afternoon for their 10
th straight loss. The Gryphons continue to head the opposite direction with their eighth straight victory. Set scores were 21-25, 26-24, 25-9 & 25-20.
The first set started evenly but Guelph gave up a 7-0 run to fall behind 11-6. After clawing back to lead 16-14 at the technical timeout, the Gryphons again gave up an 8-1 run as Waterloo took the first set 25-21.
Set two started poorly again for Guelph as they fell behind 4-0. Again the Gryphons had to battle back and were within one point at the technical timeout. Waterloo continued to put the pressure on as they had leads of 21-18 & 23-21, but Guelph finished with a 5-1 run of their own to take the set 26-24.
The third set saw the Gryphons jump out to an early lead thanks to some breakdowns in the Waterloo service reception and Guelph won comfortably at 25-9. The Gryphons jumped ahead again in set four and appeared to be cruising to another comfortable win ahead 17-7. However, after a couple of Waterloo blocks, Guelph's defense and serve reception broke down and Waterloo climbed to within two points before the Gryphons recovered to win the set and the match at 25-20.
Madison DeDecker (Dorchester, Ont.) led the Guelph offense with 19 points (17 kills, 2 aces) followed by
Alicia Combe (St. Catharines, Ont.) with 15 (9 kills, 4 aces, 2 blocks) while
Kristen Almhjell (Richmond, BC) and
Rachel Petcoff (London, Ont.) led the Gryphons in digs with 18 and 17 respectively.
Madison Taylor (St. Catharines/) capped off her strong weekend of play with 12 more kills in the loss. She was also as strong defensively with three blocks and 14 digs.
Shannon Lodoen (Waterloo/) and
Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/) rounded out the Waterloo attack with eight kills each.
Mikaela Klie (/) was strong in the game but her 33 assists weren't enough to snap Waterloo's losing streak.
The Warriors will be back in action next weekend with a pair of home games at the PAC against Lakehead.
