Box Score The Warriors put together an incredible effort to end their losing streak but came up just short falling to the McMaster Marauders 3-2 (25-16, 15-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-10) on Friday night at the PAC. McMaster improves to 9-5 on the season good for second spot in the OUA west while Waterloo remains in the basement at 3-11.
The opening set would be all McMaster as the visitors opened up a 12-point lead and cruised to take the set 25-16.
The second set would be a different story with Waterloo opening up a 12-5 lead thanks to some outstanding hustle by
Mikaela Klie (/) and superb blocking by
Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/) and
Natasha Spaling (Drayton/). The Marauders would however claw their way back to within four (13-9) following a few reception errors by the black and gold.
A timeout called by head coach Luke Snider would settle the home side and Waterloo would come out taking the next three points to regain their seven point lead. The Warriors would pull away with strong serving by
Gillian Henderson (Ottawa/) and several kills by rookie outside Taylor Madison to take the set easily 25-15.
The third set would again see the Warriors open up a 20-14 lead led by
Gillian Henderson (Ottawa/) and
Kristen Bartmann (Uxbridge/) who were putting on a digging clinic. McMaster would however claw their way back with five straight point s off the serve of former Warrior Kayla Ng.
The two combatants would continue to go toe-for-toe before Henderson would put it away with a nicely placed roll shot to hand her team the 25-23 set victory and 2-1 lead.
Shannon Lodoen (Waterloo/) was also a huge factor in the set with several set-changing kills.
In the fourth, McMaster would jump out to the early lead but Waterloo would respond with Taylor showing off her serve with five straight points. The Marauders would however continue to fight and regain their lead at 16-13 and would hold on to take the fourth 25-19 setting up a fifth and deciding set.
The Marauders jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the fifth and didn't look back en route to a 15-10 set win and 3-2 match victory over the Warriors.
Maicee Sorenson and Mira Krunic led the way for the Marauders with 11 kills each while Ng was tremendous in her return to the PAC with 48 assists.
For the Warriors Lodoen was a force with a game high 17 kills while Henderson had 12. Taylor showed her bright future with the Warriors with 12 kills of her own while adding three service aces. Defensively
Kristen Bartmann (Uxbridge/) was a digging machine with 29 pick-ups in the contests.
The Warriors will go back on the road tomorrow in Guelph before closing out the season with four straight home games.
