Box Score Add the Waterloo Warriors to the list of teams victimized by the nation's most potent offensive attack.
Forwards Jamie Wise and Domenic Alberga, the top two scorers in the CIS, each added three more points to their season total in leading the Ryerson Rams to a 5-1 victory over the Warriors on Saturday afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
Brett Mackie (Whitby/) scored Waterloo's only goal, as the Warriors lost their second game in a row and dropped to 8-8-2 on the season. The Rams, ranked 10
th in the CIS top-10 poll, elevated themselves to the top spot in the OUA West division with a 14-5-0 record.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) took the loss in the Warriors net, as he allowed 3 goals on 10 shots before being replaced by
Justin Leclerc (Saskatoon/) in the second period. Troy Passingham turned aside 35 shots for the Rams in the win.
In a first period that would be dominated by the Rams, the Warriors actually came within inches of opening the scoring when
Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge/) hit the goal post on a partial break early in the first. Just seconds later, with Ryerson on an abbreviated power play, Wise scored his first of three goals on the game to put the Rams up 1-0.
The Rams would strike twice more before the period ended, as Mark Corbett scored an unassisted marker before Wise added his second on the man advantage to make the score 3-0 after one period.
The Warriors came out in the second period with a new goaltender and some more jump, but Passingham held the fort for Ryerson. In the latter stages of the middle frame, Wise completed his hat trick when he beat Leclerc to put the Rams up 4-0. But Mackie's goal made it 4-1 after forty minutes, giving the Warriors some signs of life heading into the third period.
However, any momentum the Warriors might have earned was quickly taken away when Alberga restored the four-goal Rams advantage just over three minutes into the third. As the period wore on, tempers began to flare and both teams made frequent trips to the sin bin. But while penalties filled up the game sheet, the Warriors couldn't create another entry in the goals column.
Waterloo will now regroup and focus on a solid week of practices before hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues next Friday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena. Puck drop is slated for 7:30pm.
Notes: The Warriors went 1-for-10 on the power play, while Ryerson went 3-for-9…the loss pushes Waterloo's record to 0-2-2 against Toronto-based teams this season…with their assists on Mackie's goal,
Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) and
Chris Chappell (Pickering/) extended their point streaks to five games each.
