The Waterloo men's tennis team had their busiest and most successful weekend of the season winning three matches in as many days.
Waterloo 7, UOIT 0
On Friday, the Warriors traveled to Oshawa to play the UOIT Ridgebacks for a 6:30pm start. The Warriors started well winning all three doubles matches which gained them the doubles point. It was the first doubles point won by the team this season as last weekend they were shut out by Montreal and Western. Lifted by this win, they swept all six of the singles matches easily with the only close match at no. 2 which Alex Sahu managed to pull out 7-6 in the third.
Waterloo 5, York 2
The following day saw the Warriors battle York at the Rexall Centre indoor courts in Toronto. Originally scheduled for the outdoor courts at York, rain forced play indoors where only three courts were available for the noon start.
For the second straight day the Warriors won the doubles point when two of the three doubles teams notched up easy victories. The no. 1 team of
Vincent Chan (Markham/) and rookie
John Chan (Whistler/) playing together for the first time were impressive in their debut overwhelming their opponents with power and precision. The no. 3 team of
Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/) and
Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) were also in fine form winning 8-4.
All the singles, however, were keenly contested. No. 1
Vincent Chan (Markham/) went the distance before outlasting an inspired David Kishlyansky 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The score stood at 2-2 when no. 2 Sahu and no.6
Daniel Kolesar (Waterloo/) lost 5-7, 3-6 and 2-6, 2-6 respectively.
Rookie
John Chan (Whistler/) gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead beating his opponent, also a rookie and the younger brother of Waterloo's no. 2
Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/), 6-3, 7-5 in a grueling match.
The fourth and winning point to clinch the win came courtesy of no. 5
Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/). In a day of closely contested matches, Au's was arguably the closest. He played a sensible game with great heart and determination. Au won 3-6, 7-5, 7-5. The icing for Waterloo came when no. 2 Yardi won 6-4, 6-3 to finally end a very long two-day road trip.
Waterloo 5, McMaster 2
The weary Warriors returned home to host McMaster on Sunday. Due to technical problems in the tennis dome at the
Waterloo Tennis Club, the men, for the second day in a row, had another long wait before they were able to see action.
Playing singles first, the Warriors won four of the six matches making it their third win of the weekend by a score of 5-2. Some fine performances were produced by several of the Warriors this past weekend but the most successful of them so far is rookie
John Chan (Whistler/) who is undefeated for the season in singles play.
