The Waterloo men's curling team used a 3-point seventh end to defeat the Alberta Golden Bears 7-5 in the CIS/CCA Curling Championship gold medal match. With the win the Warriors secured their first ever CIS curling title and Waterloo's eighth national championship in school history.
In what was a rematch of last year's final where the Warriors came out on the losing end, the black and gold maintained their poise they've shown all season long to claim the championship trophy and banner.
The opening six ends would be a seesaw affair as Waterloo would jump out to a 3-1 lead before Alberta responded with two in the sixth to even the score. The Warriors would tilt the momentum in their favour in the seventh with three points and would play smart curling the rest of the way to earn the 7-5 win.
First team all-Canadian and skip
Jake Walker (Minden) was outstanding for Waterloo with a 93 shooting percentage, the highest amongst all players. Waterloo's other first team all-Canadian and third
Edward Cyr (Haliburton) also put on a clinic with 90% while second
Jordan Moreau (Midland) shot 80%. Lead thrower
James Freeman (Brantford) rounded out Waterloo's strong performance with a 75 shooting percentage to give the Warriors an overall 85% compared to 82% for Alberta.
"This was a great win for our program," mentioned head coach Scott Allen who has been an integral part of Waterloo's curling success since 1998. "We have played great curling all season long and for the boys to play the way they did today was the icing on the cake."
The Warriors were 5-2 in round robin play and continued their hot hand into the playoffs, topping the host Thompson Rivers 7-6 in the semifinals to secure their spot in the gold medal match with Alberta.
