Lodoen carries Warriors to straight set victory over Gryphons

Shannon Lodoen chases down the ball in Waterloo's 3-0 win over Guelph Friday night
Box Score The Waterloo women's volleyball team put a halt to their 10 game losing streak with a straight set victory (25-7, 25-21, 29-27) over the Guelph Gryphons Friday night at the PAC.

Rookie outside hitter Shannon Lodoen (Waterloo/) was absolutely unstoppable all game long with an astounding 19.5 points on her 17 kills and three blocks to lead her squad to their third win of the season.   The Warriors are now 3-13 heading into their final weekend of play while the Gryphons drop to 4-12.

Waterloo got off to a hot start with a 6-0 lead early in the first set with Lodoen notching the first four points for the home side.  Waterloo continued their momentum throughout the set to open up a 17-6 lead.   The Guelph errors would continue to mount and Waterloo would cruise to the first set victory, 25-7.

The Gryphons would emerge as a new team in the second set taking a 6-1 lead but Lodoen would stop the bleeding and the Warriors would tally the next six of seven points to get themselves right back in the set.   Guelph would continue their strong play taking a 14-10 lead but Clara Tse (Hong Kong/) would step up with three of her five service aces in the game to cut into the Gryphon lead.

Several points later a perfect double block by the Warriors would give them their first lead of the set, 16-15 and the Warriors would maintain that lead until the end clinching the set by a score of 25-21.

With a strangle hold on the match, Waterloo looked determined to take the match in straight sets but Guelph would have other ideas.  Late in the set with the two combatants tied 22-all Guelph would take two of the next three points giving them their first set point of the game but Roselyn Zhang (Toronto/) would put away one of her 10 kills to even the match at 24's.

Guelph would obtain two more set points on perfect kills by left side Julie Gordon (Barrie) but the gritty Warrior side would fight them off with Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/) dumping one from the middle and a Gryphon error would seal the set 29-27, handing the Warriors the straight set victory.

Lodoen and Zhang had 27 kills between the two of them while Clara Tse (Hong Kong/), Kristen Sheffield (North Bay/) and Danielle Kamps (Vineland Station/) each had five.  Mikaela Klie (/) had a strong game at the setter position with 36 assists in the match.  Rookie libero Kristen Bartmann (Uxbridge/) was solid defensively with a game high 14 digs.

For the Gryphons, Gordon led her team with 12 kills while Taylor Crown (Victoria Harbour) had six.  Setter Katelyn Larson (Calgary) had 24 assists in the loss.

The Warriors close out their 2012-13 campaign with a pair of home matches next weekend against Windsor and Western.
