The Waterloo Warriors opened the OUA season on Friday night against OUA East rival Laurentian Voyaguers. Laurentian got off on the right foot, scoring the first eight points of the game and never trailing en route to an 86-67 win.
Helped by the Faculty and Staff Night crowd in attendance, Waterloo did narrow the gap on several occasions, including down just 7 points with 4:00 left on the clock. Laurentian closed out the game outscoring the Warriors 14-2.
The Laurentian tandem of Josh Budd and Alex Ratte led the Voyaguers, scoring 24 and 22 points respectively. Tychon Carter-Newman added 14 points. For the Warriors, Jaspreet Gill (Oliver/) led all scorers with 28 points, including 11 of 13 from the foul line. Mike Helsby (Waterloo/) was the other Warrior in double figures, with 11.
Laurentian out-rebounded the Warriors 45-25 and shot 50% from the field compared to Waterloo's 31%.
Next game for Waterloo is Saturday night against the new team in the OUA, Algoma Thunderbirds. Game time is 8:00pm at the PAC and can be seen live on Warriors TV.
