Box Score While the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team's first road trip of 2013-14 wasn't a total bust, they weren't able to come back home with the souvenirs they wanted – two points and a win.
Jordan Forfar scored the only goal of the shootout and Andrew Perugini made 35 stops to lift the eighth-ranked York Lions over the tenth-ranked Warriors 3-2 at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena in North York Thursday night.
The win keeps the Lions undefeated this season, as they pushed their OUA West-best record to 5-0-0. The loss dropped Waterloo's record to 2-1-1, and the Warriors are now winless in two after starting the season 2-0.
Perugini was solid for the host Lions in net, as he added three shootout saves to his regulation/overtime total of 35.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) suffered his first loss as a Warrior, steering aside 31 stops in the loss.
The Warriors actually drew first blood in the opening frame, as
Justin Larson (Buckhorn/) capitalized only 19 seconds into the first Waterloo power play of the evening. Less than two minutes later, York's Michael Santini potted a rebound behind Morrison to even the score at 1-1 after twenty minutes.
The second period seemed to lack flow, but it was more a product of two well-coached and well-prepared defensive squads that refused to give an inch. The Lions had back-to-back power plays midway through the second, but the Warriors were able to hold them at bay and keep the score even at ones through two periods.
In the third, the Lions finally broke the nearly 34-minute deadlock when Tyler McGee beat Morrison to put the hosts up 2-1. The Warriors responded just past the period's 10-minute mark, when defenceman
Ryan Hanes (Kanata/) notched his first career CIS goal, an unassisted marker to square the score at 2.
After overtime solved nothing, Forfar scored on York's first shootout attempt while the Warriors shooters all came up empty, earning the Lions the extra point in the standings.
The Warriors will now turn their attention to another nationally-ranked club, as the sixth-ranked Western Mustangs will welcome them to London on Saturday night at 7pm.
Notes: The Warriors went 1-2 on the man advantage, while the Lions went 0-7…Warriors forward
Chris Chappell (Pickering/) notched an assist on Larson's first period goal, extending his point streak to four games to start his CIS career…This was the third straight game in which the Warriors scored only two goals in regulation time.
