A good weekend for the Waterloo Warriors Men's Varsity team capturing first place honors at the Brock Invitational Curling Event for the second straight year. Starting with an opening loss against Laurier's Junior Varsity team, the men posted wins against Lakehead, Guelph and UOIT before meeting the Mustangs in what was an excellent final.
This is a lead-up event to the OUA Provincials that will be held February 14 to 18 in Guelph and the second of three events prior to the Provincials.
Entering a field of 10-teams, Waterloo in Pool “A” finished in first place with a 3 - 1 record and a shootout score (over four games) of 60 inches (second only to pool “B”s Western Mustangs' 21). The 3 – 1 record, plus our excellent shootout results placed Waterloo first in their pool and into the final against Western's men.
The final game had skip
Jake Walker (Minden/), vice Ed Cyr, second
Jordan Moreau (Midland/) and lead
James Freeman (Brantford/) facing the Mustangs who had gone through the vent without a loss. The eight-end contest was filled with excellent play and, as a low scoring game, some surprises. Though all members of the team played well, the high percentage went to varsity rookie
Jordan Moreau (Midland/) with 89%. This was a very low scoring game with our win coming posting a 4 to 3 victory but could have gone either way. Skip
Jake Walker (Minden/) made some excellent calls, threw well and, posting an 81% led the Warriors to their first championship of the season.
The Warriors now host next Sunday, February 3 and then vie for their second Provincial Championship at the Guelph Curling Club February 14 to 18, 2013. Following their Brock victory, they are well placed to repeat at Provincial Champions in a field that can best be described as very strong.
