Men's tennis open season with two tight losses

Vincent Chan continued his OUA dominance into his third season
Saturday, Sept. 15
Montreal 4, Waterloo 3

The Waterloo Warriors began their 2012 season against Montreal University Saturday at the Waterloo Tennis Club losing 4-3 to the Carabins.  The Carabins are fresh from defending their title as National Champions at the National Universities Championships held this year at the Montreal Uniprix Stadium during the Rogers Cup in August.

The first point of the tie went to Montreal winning two of the three doubles matches. Waterloo's no. 1 pair of Vincent Chan (Markham/) and Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/) won their match handily 8-3.

Waterloo's three points came from No.1 Vincent Chan (Markham/), No.3 Alex Sahu and No. 6 Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/) in singles play.

Chan put on an impressive display reminding us why he is the most successful OUA men's singles player for the last two years. Sahu was 0-4 down in the first set before shaking off nerves to storm back to win it 6-4. He won the second set 6-4. Au, while not a newcomer to the team, having played in 2010 for the Warriors, is now getting back into form and fitness having been abroad for a year on co-op work term. Like Sahu, he had a slow start, down 0-5 in the first set, he rallied to win three straight games before losing it 3-6. Playing with more confidence, he outlasted his opponent to take the next two sets.

The three singles matches lost all went to three sets. No.2 Nachiket Yard, No. 4 Ayaz Awadia (Cambridge/) and freshman Michael Liao (Thornhill/) at no. 5 played well but were not as match fit as their opponents. Liao, making his debut at varsity level is a promising  prospect for the Warriors.

Doubles:

Chan & Yardi bt. Augustin Lazarus & Colomban Bounine 8-3
Sahu & Au lost to Remi Trudeau & Kevin Beljaars 5-8
Liao & Follis lost to Alexandre Bollini & Samba Samoura 6-8

Singles:

Chan bt David Sarrasin 6-3, 6-2
Yardi lost to Colomban Bounine 5-7, 6-3, 6-4
Sahu bt Samba Samoura 6-4, 6-4
Awadia lost to Antoine Bourdon 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
Liao lost to Augustin Lazarus 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
Au bt Remi Trudeau 3-6, 6-4, 6-4

Sunday, Sept. 16
Western 5, Waterloo 2

On Sunday the Warriors traveled to London and suffered their second loss in as many days. The strong Mustang team dealt out a 5-2 beating on the Warriors.

Again, the stellar play of Vincent Chan (Markham/) in both singles and doubles was the bright spot of the day. Chan and Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/), fended off a very aggressive challenge from Western's no. 1 doubles team.  Just like Saturday, no. 2 and no. 3 teams fell short. Losing a key member of the team who is on work term in Calgary, this year's no.2 and 3 doubles teams are works in progress.

The Warriors two points came from wins by no. 1 Chan and no. 2 Yardi. No.3 Alex Sahu had a close match but the lower order of the team were outperformed by their opponents.

The Western Mustangs won the bronze medal at this year's National Universities Championships held in Montreal in August. Montreal University and Western were the OUA representatives at the Championship.

Chan & Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/) bt Conor Giltrap 8-6
Sahu & Aaron Au (Richmond Hill/) lost to Matthew Buckley & Peter Askew 2-8

Yardi bt Thomas Young 6-4, 6-0
Sahu lost to Matt Jaekel 5-7, 3-6
