Hawks hand Warriors second consecutive shutout loss

Box Score For the second straight meeting, the No. 6 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team (11-1-1) shutout their cross-town rivals the Waterloo Warriors (3-8-2), as they skated away with a 5-0 win on Sunday night at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

Fiona Lester led the way for Laurier as she posted a goal and two assists to move into second place in OUA scoring for defencemen.

The Hawks controlled the game from the opening faceoff as they outshot the Warriors 12-6 in the opening period. Laurier would open the scoring nine minutes into the game when Devon Skeats of Whitby, Ont., fired home her team-leading ninth goal of the season to put the Hawks in front 1-0.

The second period was much of the same as Laurier limited the Warriors to just four shots on goal while scoring three times past Waterloo starting goaltender Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/).  Laura Brooker, Danelle Im and Tammy Freiburger, all tallied in the frame to give the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Lester, who had already earned assists on Skeats' and Freiburger's goals, rounded out the scoring late in the third period with her fourth goal of the season.
Laurier netminder Erika Thunder of Buffalo Point, Man., picked up her second shutout of the season by stopping all 19 shots she faced. Bouwhuis, meanwhile, finished with 25 saves for the Warriors.

The Warriors will attempt to shake off a tough weekend against top-notch opponents and turn their attention to Western who comes to town on Saturday for a 2pm game at the CIF arena.  They follow up that contest with a game against Windsor on Sunday afternoon at the CIF as well.
