With an early game on Saturday morning against Queen's University on their home turf, the Warriors Field Hockey Team left for Kingston on Friday afternoon for the final OUA regular season games. And, this proved beneficial as the team got the results they hoped for.
Queen's were determined to make the Warriors work for everything and started strongly with some nice passing play; the action was back and forth with the play primarily in the midfield. The Warriors were able to generate some penalty corners and took the lead in the 16
th minute when
Alana Raymond (Ajax/) tucked in a rebound opportunity. However, this did not deter the Gaels and they tied up the game 7 minutes later.
The Warriors capitalized on another penalty corner in the last minute when
Jessana Wartman (Cambridge/) powered a flick past the Queen's goalkeeper to take a 2-1 lead into the half.
The start of the second half proved to be more of the same back and forth free-flowing play as Queen's stepped up the tempo looking for the equalizer. The Warriors held their ground and started finding open space, continually getting penalty corners. The team once again executed on a play as
Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) scored her fifth goal of the season at the 45 minute mark to increase the lead. As the time went on, the Warriors proved to be the fitter team and began to dominate, seemingly getting a penalty corner every 2-3 minutes. The game was put out of reach in the 63
rd minute when Danny Wade was allowed to walk into the penalty spot on a corner variation to score her first goal as a Warrior and give her squad the 4-1 win.
In their second match of the day the Warriors took on McGill with the hopes of finishing the regular season on a positive note. The team started extremely well and were limiting McGill to very few attacking opportunities, controlling both the amount of possession and time the Redmen had with the ball as well as territory battle.
At the 27
th minute mark, McGill found an open gap and broke out for a three player advantage; further miscommunication then allowed for an easy tap-in on an empty net and the Warriors were down 1-0.
Down 1-0 at half a new Warrior team would emerge in the second half firing on all cylinders. Within two minutes of the re-start, the game was level as
Katie Farrugia (Burlington/) scored on a penalty corner.
The Warriors maintained a high tempo and McGill found it hard getting the play out of their half. This constant pressure proved successful as 15 minutes later,
Stephanie Snyder (Waterloo/) was able to get into the scoring circle and put away a reverse stick shot for the lead. Less than five minutes later,
Courtney Bisch (Wellesley/) had some nice passing exchanges before driving to the net and finding
Melissa Lewis (Waterloo/), deflecting the ball in for her fifth of the season.
Not letting up and determined to finish the regular season strong, Waterloo continued to work until the final whistle. They were rewarded with one more goal, from yet another penalty corner variation as Snyder netted her second goal, a minute from the end to give the Warriors another 4-1 win.
The Warriors concluded the season with a 7-4-1 record which places them in a tie for third spot with Western but because the Mustangs have a better plus/minus the Warriors will slide down to the fourth spot for the OUA Championship and will face the York Lions in the OUA quarter-finals on Friday, October 26 at 12pm on Warrior Field. The other OUA quarter-final match will feature the Western Mustangs and St. Mary's Huskies at 2pm.
Be sure to come out and support your Warriors all weekend long at Warrior Field as they look for an OUA title.
