Box Score The Waterloo women's hockey team earned their first win of the season edging the UOIT Ridgebacks 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night in Oshawa. Rookie
Marissa Redmond (Ajax/) tied the game at the 13:25 minute mark of the third period and scored the lone goal in the shootout to lift the Warriors to victory.
The Warriors opened the scoring as first year forward
Siobhan Hewitt-Kenda (North Vancouver/) notched her first CIS goal at the 18:31 mark on the power play.
Kelly MacLean (St. George/) and
Kori Lee Martin (Wellesley/) picked up the helpers on the goal.
The Ridgebacks found the equalizer on the stick of Samantha Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.) only two minutes into the second period. The unassisted goal sent the game into the third period tied 1-1.
UOIT found the go ahead goal midway through the third period as Nicole LoPresti (Hamilton, Ont.) snapped one passed Warrior netminder
Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia/). Only three minutes later the Warriors evened the game up once again as Redmond shoveled one past UOIT goalie Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) to send the game to overtime.
UOIT would outshoot the Warriors 4-2 in overtime but could not solve Bouwhuis setting up a shootout where Redmond would score in the opening round and Bouwhuis would stop all three Ridgeback shooters to give Waterloo the crucial extra point.
Bouwhuis was solid for the visiting side stopping 35 of 37 shots faced while Charette was handed the loss allowing two goals on 19 shots.
Waterloo is back on the ice tomorrow afternoon against the York Lions (1-3-1). Puck drop is set for 2pm.
