Men's tennis open up season with victory over Montreal, close loss to Western

Saturday, Sept. 17 vs. Montreal
Waterloo 4, Montreal 3

The Waterloo Warriors season opener on Saturday at the Waterloo Tennis Club started off on the right foot for the men's team with a win over the Montreal Carabins, current OUA team champions and this year's National University team champions.

First blood was drawn by the Montreal team when they took the doubles point. The Warriors, however, stormed back to win four of the six singles matches to give them the win. Although the Carabins did not play three of their key players in the singles, this did not detract from the fine performances turned in by Vincent Chan (Markham/) at #1, Zubair Virjee (Calgary/) at #3, Ayaz Awadia (Cambridge/) at #5 and Steven Nieboer (Waterloo/) at #6.  Awadia, playing his first match in two years because of a shoulder injury, was particularly impressive with a solid performance winning 6-2, 6-0.

Sunday, Sept. 18 @ Western
Western 4, Waterloo 3

The Warriors traveled to London to face the Western Mustangs on Sunday. The Mustangs, along with Montreal Carabins represented the OUA in the National University team championships in August at the Rexall Centre. The Warriors were not daunted by the prospect of playing the two top teams in as many days in the first weekend of competition.

The doubles point was narrowly lost when #1 pair of Vincent Chan (Markham/) and Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/) lost in a close tie-break to give Western two of the three doubles matches.

In singles play, Waterloo won at #1, #2 and #3 positions. Vincent Chan (Markham/), last year's OUA singles champion gave another impressive performance in beating his opponent 6-2, 6-2.  Another noteworthy performance was Nachiket Yardi (Mississauga/)'s at #2. Yardi broke back when his opponent was serving for the match at 6-5 in the third set. In the tie-break Yardi was solid off the ground and aided by a couple of unforced errors from his opponent, Yardi won the tie-break 6-3. Lee Follis (Brantford/St. John's College) and Daniel Yu playing at #5 and #6 were making their debut and both gave determined performances.
