Warriors fall to Gaels in OUA quarter-finals

The Warriors lost their OUA quarter-final match up in straight sets to the no. 10 Queen's Gaels on Saturday evening in Kingston at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.  Set scores were 25-23, 25-20, 25-17.

Three Gaels recorded nine or more kills to advance to the OUA final four tournament hosted by the Western Mustangs next weekend.

The Gaels received strong efforts from Joren Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., Bryan Fautley of Oakville, Ont., and Michael Amoroso of Toronto. Zeeman finished the match with a game-high 12 kills while Fautley was the only other player to reach double-digits in kills with 10.

Amoroso, who finished the match with nine kills, was especially strong in the opening set as he recorded five kills to help the Gaels overcome a 21-18 deficit.

All three players were also very efficient in their hitting with Amoroso leading all three with a 41.2 hitting percentage. Overall as a team, the Gaels outhit the Warriors 25% to 15.6%.

For the Warriors, outside hitter Fiodar Kazhamiaka (Waterloo, Ont.), led Waterloo with eight kills and six digs in a losing effort.  Kazhamiaka had a stellar rookie season with Waterloo ranking sixth in the OUA with 3.7 points per set and was eighth in kills with 210 over the season. 

Setter Scott Thomson (St. Marys, Ont.) had a strong game for Waterloo picking up 24 assists.  Thomson led the OUA in assists this season with 626 in 20 games played, an average of 9.48 assists per game.

The Gaels now advance to the OUA Final Four tournament where they will face the No. 9 McMaster Marauders in the first semifinal. The game is set to begin at 5:00 pm Friday night at Alumni Hall on the campus of the University of Western Ontario.
