Carleton 102, Waterloo 53
The Carleton University Ravens men's basketball team showed why it's the top team in the country on Friday night, storming to a 102-53 win over the University of Waterloo Warriors at the Ravens' Nest.
The Ravens put on a show the entire game, never losing their first quarter lead. The Warriors struggled to keep hold of the ball, giving up nine turnovers as Carleton hammered Waterloo for 28 points in the first quarter, a season high.
Carleton shot an impressive 57.1 per cent from inside the paint on 21 shots, easily surpassing Waterloo's 15.4 per cent success rate.
Waterloo attempted to force baskets in the second quarter but was denied by the fast-breaking Carleton offence. The Warriors were able to muster up more offence than the first but still couldn't make a dent in the Ravens' sizeable lead.
Dan Penner (Winnipeg) capped an impressive second-quarter performance with a dunk midway through to the delight of the Carleton fans. Penner wasn't done yet as he then sunk back-to-back three-point baskets.
The Warriors resorted to long three-point attempts in the third, trying to claw back the deficit. But the Ravens refused to ease up, outscoring the Warriors by 11 in the quarter.
Penner, coming off nine points in the first half, carried his outstanding performance into the second half and finished with a game-high 22 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds in the win.
Not to be outdone, Willy Manigat (Ottawa) kept pace, scoring 21 points in the game – 13 coming from inside the paint and matching Penner with nine from outside.
Top scorer for the Warriors was
Cam McIntyre (Kitchener) with 11 points while
Srdjan Pejicic (Waterloo) and
Zach Angelini (Hamilton) each added nine in the loss.
Waterloo will hope for a better result in their final game of 2011 as they face the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night.
