The Warrior women's volleyball team lost their first match of the season falling to the York Lions in straight sets (25-18, 25-21, 25-21) on Friday night at the Tait McKenzie Centre in Toronto.
With the win, the Lions improve to a perfect 4-0 this season and take over sole possession of first place in the OUA with eight points while Waterloo fell to 3-1 and sit in a tie for second place with Ottawa and Toronto.
The Lions dominated the first set, scoring five unanswered points on Melissa Humana-Paredes's (Toronto) opening service game and never looking back.
The Lions led by as many as nine points in the frame after racking up five points on Sriskandarajah's first service game to take a 15-6 lead. The Warriors would make things interesting down the stretch, pulling to within two late in the set on back-to-back points from
Laura Klein (Kitchener/) (Kitchener, Ont.) and
Kayla Ng (London/) (London, Ont.), but the Lions would hold on and close out the set on a three-point service game from Sriskandarajah.
The second set was a much different story with both teams trading points and leads early on.
Midway through the frame, however, the Lions seized momentum on a two-point service game from Humana-Paredes to take a slim 13-11 lead. Both teams would trade points for the remainder of the set, but the Lions never surrendered their lead, eventually going on to win the set by four thanks to another multi-point service game from Humana-Paredes.
The third set played out much like the first with the Lions jumping out to an early lead and cruising to the set win. Moments after taking an early 10-7 lead on an ace from Rouse, the Lions would explode for four unanswered points on Sriskandarajah's second service game of the set to take a huge 19-12 lead. From there, they would coast to the 25-21 set win, completing the shutout and preserving their undefeated season while handing Waterloo their first loss of the season.
Leading the attack for the Warriors was Waterloo athlete of the week
Laura Klein (Kitchener/) with 13 kills while adding 24 digs. Setter
Kayla Ng (London/) had 24 assists in the loss.
The Warriors look to rebound this evening as they battle the Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto. Game time is set for 6pm.
