The Warrior women's volleyball team remains perfect on the season following a 3-1 victory over the McMaster Marauders on Friday evening at the PAC gym in Waterloo. Set scores were 20-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-20.
The Warriors were led by third year outside hitter
Laura Klein (Kitchener/) who was outstanding all game long finishing with 16 kills, 13 digs and one block to lead Waterloo to the win.
With the win Waterloo improved to 2-0 on the season while McMaster fell to 1-2.
McMaster came out flying in the first set as they controlled the ball well and took an early advantage at the net. With McMaster up 20-18, they would not look back en route to a 25-20 first set victory.
The second set would see both teams go back and forth as momentum would switch several times throughout the set. Waterloo held a late set lead with McMaster clawing their way back to even the score at 24 before Waterloo would record two straight points to take the all important second set 26-24.
The third set would see the Warriors continue their second set momentum as they owned the net play and would take a 20-16 lead late into the set. McMaster would not go down without a fight as they would get within one point but the Warriors led by Klein would battle their way to a 25-22 third set victory.
Waterloo took control in the fourth set taking a 16-8 lead only to see it fizzle away with McMaster's determination at the net. With the scored tied 20-20 strong serving by first year middle
Natasha Spaling (Drayton/) would give Waterloo five straight points and a three sets to one victory.
Spaling finished the game with nine kills, four digs and three blocks for 13 points while another rookie
Oksana Kozak (Mississauga/) also added nine kills while digging the ball 14 times and adding two service aces. Fourth year setter
Kayla Ng (London/) was all over the court showing her speed and athleticism putting up 37 assists in game.
Fourth year middle Shannon McRobert (Whitby, Ont.) led the attack for McMaster with 15 kills and 22 points. Third year setter Amanda Weldon (Hamilton, Ont.) had 31 assists in the loss.
The Warriors take their perfect record into Saturday's match against the Ryerson Rams. Game time is set for 8pm at the PAC gym.
