The Waterloo women's volleyball team opened up their 2011-12 season on the road with a 3-0 sweep over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors took advantage of several Ottawa mistakes in the first set to take an 18-11 lead, but Ottawa would respond with a 10-2 run to take a 21-20 lead. Fortunately for the black and gold, they were able to put a stop to the bleeding and hold on for a 25-21 first set victory.
The Warriors carried the momentum into the second set as they took an early 11-8 lead. But the Gee-Gees finally showed some signs of life on offence as the uOttawa hitters started to connect on third-year setter Christina Grail's sets (London, Ont.). In the end Waterloo was able to continue their strong net play and take the second set 25-19.
Waterloo continued their offensive minded game plan in the third set as they once again took an early set lead at 11-5. Ottawa once again bounced back in the set but the Warriors were too determined to allow any sort of comeback taking the third and final set 25-20 to go to 1-0 on the season. With the loss Ottawa moved to .500 with a 1-1 record after winning their opening match 3-0 over Guelph.
Rookie outside hitter
Oksana Kozak (Mississauga/) showed why head coach Gaby Jobst is excited for her young talent as she led the Warriors with nine kills and eight digs. She also added three service aces in the match. Third year outside
Laura Klein (Kitchener/) also put together a strong game with nine kills and nine digs. Setter
