Women's volleyball upset Gee Gees

The Warriors earned a come from behind victory on Saturday night, upsetting the Ottawa Gee Gees at the PAC gym in Waterloo.

The Gee Gees jumped out of the gate with two quick set victories (25-20, 25-18) to take control of the match.  The resilient Warrior squad awoke just in time to tip the momentum in their favour and take the close third set by a score of 27-25. 

With new found energy, the Warriors showed their bright future with two strong sets to wrap up their match and earn the two points and their sixth victory of the season.  Final two set scores were 25-21, 15-11.

With the win, Waterloo (6-9) sits in fifth place, eight points back of fourth place Brock in the OUA west.  Ottawa fell to 10-6 on the season and are tied with Queen's for second place in the OUA east.

Leading the attack for the Warriors was second year outside hitter Joanna Meltzer (Georgetown, Ont.) who finished her strong game with 13 kills, 18 digs and one assisted block.  She also added two service aces in the match.  Rookie hitter Meaghan Loveday (Kitchener, Ont.) added to the attack with 12 kills and two assisted blocks.  Setter Kayla Ng (London, Ont.) had 38 assists in the match while libero Katie Spack (Ottawa, Ont.) was solid defensively with 28 digs.

For Ottawa first year hitter Myriam English (Orleans, Ont.) led all players with 17 kills while Laura Carmanico (Ottawa, Ont.) had 15.  Fifth year Setter Tess Edwards (Kanata, Ont.) had 50 assists in the five set match.

Next up for the Warriors is a road trip to face Windsor and Western on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5.
