The Warriors came back to tie the Brock Badgers twice in the game but fell in a shootout to lose the game 4-3 on Wednesday night in St. Catharines.
Despite the loss, the Warriors (14-9-1) picked up a crucial single point and now sit tied for second in the OUA west with Lakehead and Laurier with 29 points. The Badgers improved to 10-8-6 and sit alone in fifth with 26 points.
Senior Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Alta.) opened the scoring for Brock on the power play 11:58 into the first period with assists from Mullin and freshman Jake LaPlante (Mississauga, Ont.). The Badgers extended their lead five minutes later when Waterloo goalie Keaton Hartigan (Kitchener, Ont.) misplayed the puck, allowing Abercrombie to net his team-leading 13th of the season to put the Badgers up two.
With less than two minutes left in the opening frame, Waterloo pulled to within one goal when Jarrett Schnurr (Waterloo, Ont.) beat Badgers junior goalie Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.).
Midway through the second period Waterloo's Tyler Moir (Calgary, Alta.) evened the score at two with his ninth of the year. It was less than a minute later that the Badgers responded and regained their one goal lead. Rookie defenceman Kevin Christmas (Hamilton, Ont.) made an end to end rush and beat Hartigan for his second career goal.
At the 12:15 mark of the third period, Waterloo's Josh Schappert (Winnipeg, Man.) knotted the game at three as his shot from a bad angle eluded Jory. The remainder of the third period and overtime was scoreless, sending the game to a shootout.
In shootout, Jory stopped the first Waterloo shooter and Abercrombie was able to slip the puck past Hartigan to put the Badgers up by a goal. Jory cut the angle down on Waterloo's second shooter Steve Whitely (Petrolia, Ont.). The Badgers next shooter Mullin beat Hartigan top shelf to give the Badgers the victory.
Haritgan made 21 saves in the loss while Jory stopped 28 shots to give the Badgers a crucial two points.
The Warriors travel to Oshawa on Saturday, January 29 to face the UOIT Ridgebacks for the third time this month. Waterloo is up 2-0 in the season series with two big wins at home over the Ridgebacks.
