SATURDAY, SEPT. 11 VS. WESTERN
Game 1 - Western 2, Waterloo 1
The Warriors opened their season Saturday with a double header with the Western Mustangs. Waterloo dropped the opener 2-1 in a classic pitcher's duel. Western broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the seventh taking a 1-0 lead. Waterloo added a run of their own in the bottom of the eight to tie the score but lost it in the ninth giving up a run on a wild throw by catcher Dave Allen trying to throw out a runner stealing third. Starter Adam Lentz (Calgary/) lasted six innings, allowing no runs on two hits; he walked five and struck out seven. Joel Smith (Chatham/) came on in relief and took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned). Offensively, the Warriors managed only four hits, with Mike Gatchene, Jason Diniz-Wood (Brampton/), David Allen (Burlington/), and Thomas Biskup (Markham/) each picking up singles.
Game 2 – Western 6, Waterloo 1
Waterloo lost the second game of the double header 6-1 to Western to open the season 0-2. Waterloo starter Stefan Sawicky (Ajax/) had some control problems early on walking three batters in the first inning and falling behind early 2-0. Stefan took the loss, lasting five innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits, with eight walks and striking out 4. Mike Glinka (Kitchener/) led the way offensively with two hits, a double and a single, while Thomas Biskup (Markham/) and Dave Allen each added a hit. Ben Norris (Waterloo/) chipped in with one hit and had the lone Warrior RBI.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 12 AT TORONTO
Game 1 – Toronto 4, Waterloo 3
On Sunday, Waterloo traveled to Toronto for their second double header in as many days. The Warriors got off to a good start, holding a 3-0 lead going into the seventh inning from the strong pitching of starter Anthony Douris (Newmarket/). Douris, taking a no hitter into the seventh, ran into some trouble walking the first batter of the inning and then having his no hitter broken up with a two-run home run to get the Blues to within one. Douris finished the day going seven strong allowing two runs on three hits; he walked one and struck out five. The Warriors held a one run lead into the bottom of the ninth but Toronto rallied for two runs off reliever Dexter Chu (Mississauga/) giving Toronto a 4-3 victory and dropping the Warriors to 0-3. Offensively, Thomas Biskup (Markham/) led the Warriors with two hits while Chris Ryan (Waterloo/) had a hit and an RBI and Greg Cohen (Toronto/) scored two runs.
Game 2 – Waterloo 3, Toronto 2
Waterloo improved its record to 1-3 in game two against Toronto, winning 3-2 to get their first win of the season. Waterloo scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead, but Toronto chipped away with a run of their own in the first and one in the sixth to have the score tied heading to the seventh and final inning. Thomas Biskup (Markham/) led off the seventh with a single for the Warriors, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a sacrifice fly. Ben Norris (Waterloo/) then beat out an infield single to drive home Biskup for the game winning run. Rookie starter Brandon Beattie (St. Catharines/) picked up the win in his first start for the Warriors, going six innings, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Rookie reliever Matt Reeves (London/) picked up the save throwing a shutout seventh inning. Ben Norris (Waterloo/) led the way offensively with a hit and an RBI, while Greg Cohen (Toronto/), Chris Ryan (Waterloo/), Thomas Biskup (Markham/) and Craig Van Ooteghem (Kitchener/) each had a hit.
