Warriors defeat Lancers in 3; fall to Mustangs to wrap up 2010

Friday, November 19 vs. Windsor
Waterloo 3, Windsor 0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-14)

The Warriors defeated the Windsor Lancers three sets to none on Friday night at the PAC Gym in Waterloo to move to 3-3 on the weekend.  Following a tight 26-24 first set victory, the Warriors cruised to victory winning the next two by scores of 25-20 and 25-14.  The Lancers fell to 0-5 on the season with the loss.

Leading the attack for the Warriors was second year outside hitter Joanna Meltzer (Georgetown, Ont.) who had 14 kills on 34 attempts while adding 11 digs and one service ace.  Rookie hitter Meaghan Loveday (Kitchener, Ont.) followed suit with 13 kills of her own while also adding 11 digs and a service ace.  Also contributing on the offensive side of the ball was setter Kayla Ng (London, Ont.) who set up her hitters 33 times.  Defensively, libero Katie Spack (Ottawa, Ont.) dug the ball 21 times.

For the Lancers, Kaila Seguin (Windsor, Ont.) led all hitters with 15 kills and one service ace for 16 points.  Seguin also added seven digs.  Fifth year setter Jillan Fantuz of Chatam, Ont., had 34 assists on the night.

Waterloo host the Western Mustangs tomorrow evening in their final game of the term.  Game time is set for 8:00 pm.


Saturday, November 20 vs. Western
Western 3, Waterloo 1 (25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18)

The Warriors fell one game below .500 (3-4) on Saturday evening as the visiting Western Mustangs downed the Warriors three sets to one. 

 

Western opened the game dominating the first set taking it by a score of 25-16. 

The Mustangs would take a much tighter second set by a score of 25-23 to take control of the match.

Waterloo responded in the third with much cleaner volleyball as they took the set 25-23 to send it to a fourth where Western would answer the call and deliver the final blow defeating Waterloo 25-18 in the fourth and final set.

Rookie Meaghan Loveday (Kitchener/) led the offensive attack once again with eight kills, one service ace and one block for 10 points.  First year middle MelisMelissa Steinman (Waterloo, Ont.) added six kills and six blocks.  Libero Alice Li (Toronto, Ont.) had 19 digs for the Warriors on the defensive side of the ball.

The Warriors had no answer for fourth year outside hitter Elaine Screaton (Calgary, Alta.) who had 16 kills, four blocks and two service aces for the Mustangs.  Third year Kelly Frittenberg (Alton, Ont.) had eight kills on the evening while adding a staggering five service aces.  Setter Jenna Thomson had 21 assists to round on the offensive attack for the Mustangs.


This was Waterloo's last game of the term before they return to the court for a busy 2011 where they play 12 games throughout January and February.
