York 78, Waterloo 76

David Tyndale led all scorers with 24 points and the York UniversitY Lions men's basketball team squeaked out a 78-76 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday (Nov. 19) at the Tait McKenzie Centre in a game that went down to the wire.

Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.) was an offensive powerhouse for the Lions, going 11-for-20 from the field and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. He was the architect of the Lions offence; whenever he touched the ball, points were soon to follow.

Second-year guard Ostap Choliy (Oakville, Ont.) and forward Dejan Kravic (London, Ont.) chipped in with 14-point performances of their own. Kravic was also a presence in the paint, pulling down nine rebounds on the night.

The first two quarters of the game were back-and-forth affairs, with both teams trading baskets throughout. Each quarter boiled down to a battle between guards, with Tyndale and Warriors guard Wayne Bridge (North York, Ont.) providing most of the offense for their respective teams. Tyndale drained seven baskets and Bridge drained six through two quarters, setting up a 42-42 deadlock heading into the half.

The third quarter was more of the same, but the Lions would get the better of the Warriors by a single point. The Warriors tallied most of their points off the fast break, which they used to great effect all quarter. The Lions, however, were able to counter the fast break with impressive shooting from Tyndale and Kravic and took a 65-64 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, both teams went ice cold from the field. With two points up for grabs, players on both squads began to over think their shots, resulting in a relatively low-scoring quarter. In the dying minutes of regulation, however, Tyndale and Stefan Haynes stepped up for the Lions and drained a pair of clutch shots, giving their squad a 77-74 lead. Both teams would continue to trade missed shots until the final seconds when Tyndale drained a clutch free throw to put the Lions ahead for good, 78-76.

Bridge led the Warriors with 17 points shooting 50% from the field and going perfect from the line while Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville, Ont.) and Cam McIntyre (Kitchener, Ont.) added 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Warriors take their 2-3 record to Sudbury to face the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-3) on Saturday evening.

Saturday, November 20 @ Laurentian
Waterloo 87, Laurentian 71

A 28 point first half deficit proved to be insurmountable as the Laurentian Voyageurs were handed a 87-71 loss, Saturday, November 20th against the Waterloo Warriors.  With the win the Warriors moved to .500 on the year with a 3-3 record.

The Warriors were able to dominate in the paint, collecting numerous rebounds off the offensive glass and translate second chance opportunities into points. Waterloo had a strong first half on the defensive side of the ball as well forcing 16 Laurentian turnovers. After a 7-1 Voyageur run the Warriors regained their composure and started a 15-2 run to propel themselves to a 54-26 lead at half time.

Laurentian picked up their game coming out of the half, matching the Warriors shot for shot in the opening minutes and eventually going on a 10-2 run before Waterloo called a timeout to regroup. Manny Pasquale (Victoria, B.C.) found his stroke from beyond the arc sinking six three-pointers in the game and scoring a game high 22 points. Georges Serresse (Sudbury, ON) came off the bench and recorded his 11 points in the fourth quarter helping the Voyageurs fight back within 16 in the loss.

The Warriors were led by Alan Goodhoofd (Oakville, ON) who scored 20 points, three steals and five rebounds. Wayne Bridge (North York, ON) chipped in with a double-double including 13 point and 11 rebounds as the Warriors shot 41.3% from the field in the victory.

Waterloo host a pair of cross-over games next weekend as the Toronto Varsity Blues and Ryerson Rams pay a visit to the PAC gym for Friday and Saturday night games.  Tip off is set for 8:00 pm and both games can be seen lives on the Streaming Sports Network (SSN Canada).
